October is over. Investors could be forgiven for hoping the next “black” date on the calendar comes with a discount code.

Black October: The Darkside of AI

October has earned its reputation: the Wall Street crash of 1929, Black Monday in 1987 and the financial turmoil of 2008. It is a month with plenty of reminders about underestimated risk.

This October supplied fresh anxieties as investors looked more closely at AI’s growing power—and risks they may not have priced in. The capabilities promising productivity gains can also make software vulnerabilities easier, faster and cheaper to discover and exploit. PHP security warnings and Binance’s massive hack provided stark reminders of the financial consequences of digital weaknesses.

For investors, that raises questions about security costs, business disruption and customer trust across banks, retailers, healthcare providers and utilities. AI’s potential reaches across the economy. The risks investors need to price may reach just as far.

Market Rebound: Pricing AI’s Promise and Vulnerabilities

Equities and crypto have survived major failures before. Following Lehman Brothers’ collapse in 2008, the S&P 500 regained its pre-crisis high in 2013. Bitcoin reached new records in 2017 after Mt. Gox’s collapse, and again in 2024 following the FTX fraud scandal. Recovery took time and did not erase every loss, but these episodes show how markets can rebuild confidence as uncertainty gives way to evidence.

The coming weeks should provide more evidence about AI’s opportunities and costs. Earnings and Anthropic’s proposed IPO disclosures can help investors assess adoption, revenue growth and the spending needed to deliver it. The potential for productivity gains remains compelling; the economics require scrutiny. The security equation also runs both ways. AI can make discovering and exploiting vulnerabilities faster and cheaper. It can also help defenders identify and fix them.

For investors, that suggests AI vulnerability may need to enter valuations across industries, from banks and retailers to healthcare and utilities, alongside the growth prospects. Security spending, operational resilience and potential disruption belong in the same analysis as growth.
